Aguri future back in doubt

Super Aguri could be forced to miss the Spanish Grand Prix after the group looking to purchase the struggling Formula One team announced that it was withdrawing its offer.

The team announced last month that a deal had been agreed with the Magma group that would secure its immediate future after financial uncertainty had led to rumours that it wouldn't even make the season opening Australian Grand Prix last month.

At the time, a statement issued by the Leafield-based squad revealed that agreement had been reached to retain an engine supply from Honda and that the acquisition process would be completed 'over the next few weeks'.

However, the team has now revealed that it has received a letter from the Magma Group stating that its financial backers no longer wished to fund the deal, leaving team principal Aguri Suzuki to look elsewhere for backing if the team is to continue competing.

"Super Aguri F1 Team confirms that it has been informed by Magma Group, the potential purchasers of the team, that its investors no longer wish to fund the intended acquisition," the statement read. "It is with deep regret that Aguri Suzuki is now forced to consider the future of the team, however negotiations with other parties continue.

"The team will issue a further statement in due course."

Having conducted no pre-season testing, the team has found the going tough during the opening three races of the year with a best finish of 15th thanks toAnthony Davidson in Malaysia.
